Easily upscale your image with this free open source software

Have an old photo lying around or a specific image or art that needs a little bit more clarity and detail? Try Upscayl, a free open source AI image upscaling software made by Nayam Amarshe, TSG963, and others. You can check the project out at https://github.com/upscayl/upscayl.

Upscayl can be used with a bunch of operating system ranging from Linux as a priority for Upscayl, MacOS, to Windows. A caveat though, you need a dedicated Vulkan-compatible GPU like NVIDIA's GTX and RTX or AMD's RX. Intel iGPU or any iGPU won't work with this software.

Knowing the limitation of these upscaling technologies, some artifacts and extreme smoothing can be expected. I can't guarantee a great output for all images but I can say that most of the output turned out to be very great. The upscaling works. No more pixelation, with a slightly changed brightness (can be brighter or darker).

Another great alternative (but paid) upscaling software is Topaz's Gigapixel AI. The software in some cases can generate better quality images compared to Upscayl.
